Picture showing some of the visuals a student can expect to create in these workshops

Explore how computers use math to create movement, visuals, and effects in these hands-on, beginner-friendly workshops. Participants will learn about matrices, geometric transformations, and how animations and projectiles are built using simple math concepts. Designed for high school students to adults, no advanced math skills are needed, just curiosity and interest in how things work.

Matrix Workshop: How Do Computers See Objects?: An Introduction to Matrices and Transformations
In this workshop, students will discover what a matrix is and how they are used on your computer. We will look at images and simple geometric shapes as matrices, go over how they interact with each other and are used by the computer, and recreate the way games/animations 'transform' these objects to make them move, shift, and spin, all using some basic mathematical processes.

Vector Workshop: Follow the Bouncing Ball: An Introduction to Vectors and Motion
In this workshop, students will discover vectors and some basic use cases for games and animation. You will learn how to create various objects and shapes with vectors, as well as a projectile with accurate collision effects using math. This workshop will reveal how computers process mathematical instructions to create familiar visuals and practical effects.

Materials / Supplies Needed:

   - Something to write on/with
   - Laptop optional

Instructor: Michael Opperman
Bio: Michael has a PhD in mathematics and has taught college math courses for over a decade at Champlain College in Burlington, VT.
